On May 18th, the Spanish Fork Rodeo Grounds came alive with the energy and enthusiasm of approximately 3000 seventh-grade students from Nebo and Provo School Districts. The occasion was the highly anticipated Nebo CTE Expo, a dynamic event designed to help young students explore and embrace Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways in Utah. This immersive experience allowed students to engage in hands-on games and activities while interacting with various programs and local businesses, fostering a passion for future careers and empowering them as trendsetters in our society.
A Multitude of Programs
The Nebo CTE Expo showcased an impressive array of CTE programs from both secondary and post-secondary institutions. Among the participants, MTECH (Mountainland Technical College) held a prominent presence, highlighting programs like cosmetology, culinary arts, healthcare, automation, and welding. This diverse offering gave students a glimpse into various fields and the opportunity to explore their interests and talents.
Another notable participant was Utah Valley University (UVU), which brought an impressive lineup of programs such as aviation, nursing, and engineering. These engaging displays provided students with a glimpse of what a future in these industries could entail, stimulating their curiosity and igniting a passion for learning.
Hands-On Activities and Demonstrations
The Nebo CTE Expo offered an abundance of hands-on activities and demonstrations led by both secondary and post-secondary educators. Students had the chance to engage in activities ranging from business simulations and culinary experiences to sewing, engineering challenges, computer repair exercises, architecture workshops, and robotics demonstrations. These interactive experiences allowed students to actively participate in the learning process and gain valuable skills while having fun.
One of the highlights of the event was the presence of the ALC Bottle CAPS soda bus—a unique and creative initiative that showcased the fusion of entrepreneurship, marketing, and creativity. This mobile soda shop served as an inspiration for aspiring young entrepreneurs, highlighting the potential for innovation and business development within the CTE realm.
Local Business Support
The success of the Nebo CTE Expo was made possible through the generous support and participation of local businesses. The host of industry partners included Sunroc, Geneva Rock, John Deere, US Synthetics, Duncan Aviation, KMA Architecture, Intermountain Health, Pilot Makers, My Sister's Closet, Spanish Fork City, and Berkshire Hathaway who all played an integral role in making the event a resounding success. Their involvement demonstrated their commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled workers and fostering economic growth within the community.
Cutting-Edge Technology and Experiences
The Nebo CTE Expo also introduced students to cutting-edge technology and experiences that left a lasting impression. Intermountain Health, for example, brought a high-tech robotic assist operating room experience, allowing students to operate and gain insights into the world of advanced medical technology. Additionally, imaging equipment demonstrations and respiratory experiments with pig lungs gave students a hands-on understanding of medical procedures and respiratory health.
Exciting Demonstrations
The excitement at the Nebo CTE Expo was palpable, with students eagerly anticipating thrilling displays such as motorized drift trikes, tractor pulls, and dirt drag races. High school students showcased their welding abilities, impressing industry partners and the community alike with their skills and inspiring them to explore the possibilities within the field. These captivating demonstrations served as a testament to the diverse opportunities available within the world of CTE.
Bridging the Gap for a Bright Future
The ultimate goal of the Nebo CTE Expo was to bridge the gap between high school CTE programs and the growing demand for highly trained professionals. By exposing students to a wide range of career options, the event aimed to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to become future trendsetters and meet the needs of an evolving workforce.
